A Fresh Start for rooot.it — New Planner, New App, Better Experience

Over the past few months, we've spent countless hours using rooot.it ourselves.

Planning routes.
Exporting GPX files.
Finding bugs.
Getting annoyed by things.
Fixing them.
Breaking them again.
And fixing them once more.

Today we're excited to share the result:

A completely redesigned web planner and an updated mobile app are now available.

Why we redesigned everything

As rooot.it grew, it became clear that some parts of the experience were no longer keeping up with our vision.

Features had accumulated.
Workflows had evolved.
And some design decisions that seemed reasonable months ago no longer felt right.

Instead of applying another layer of patches, we decided to step back and rethink the experience from the ground up.

The goal was simple:

Make route planning faster, clearer, and more enjoyable.

What has changed

A redesigned web planner

The planner has received its biggest update since launch.

We've improved:

  • overall usability
  • route editing workflows
  • visual clarity
  • performance
  • route inspection
  • map interactions
  • mobile responsiveness

Many small frustrations have been removed, and countless details have been refined.

Some of the biggest improvements are things you might not consciously notice—but you'll feel them while planning.

A new mobile app version

We've also released a new version of the mobile app.

The updated app includes numerous fixes, improvements, and quality-of-life enhancements based on feedback from the community and our own field testing.

You can download the latest version from the Downloads section on rooot.it.

Real-world testing

One thing we've learned:

Route planners cannot be built from behind a desk.

The best feedback comes from:

  • gravel riders
  • cyclists
  • hikers
  • explorers
  • people standing somewhere in the rain wondering why a route behaves the way it does

So we've spent a lot of time testing.

On roads.
On gravel.
In forests.
In places where mobile coverage disappears.

Many of the improvements in this release are the direct result of those experiences.

This is still just the beginning

Even though this release is a major milestone, we're still very much in beta.

We have a long list of ideas.
A long list of improvements.
And an even longer list of things we want to experiment with.

Thank you

Every bug report.
Every feature request.
Every piece of feedback.

It all helps.

rooot.it is not something we build for the community.

It's something we build with the community.

Many of the changes in this release started as comments, emails, messages, and discussions with users.

And we want to keep it that way.

Keep the feedback coming

Break things.

Tell us what feels great.
Tell us what feels wrong.
Tell us what could be better.

The best ideas often come from the people using the product every day.

And together, we'll keep making rooot.it better.

See you on the trail.
